  Six of southeastern Arizona's twelve owl species nest in the canyons of the "sky islands," but they can be difficult to find and identify. Join SABO naturalists on a no-tapes night walk in search of Whiskered Screech-Owl, Elf Owl, and other night creatures.
  

  Participants must be comfortable walking on unimproved roads and trails after dark, aided by small flashlights.
  

  $20 per person for members of SABO, $25 for non-members. Participation is limited, and prepaid reservations are required; fees are refundable only if unforeseen circumstances force SABO to cancel the walk.

  The San Pedro River, a narrow green oasis rippling through desert grassland, is one of the last wild rivers in the Southwest and one of the most endangered. These 3-hour guided walks through desert grassland and among towering cottonwood trees will introduce you to the birds and other wildlife that make their homes in the sanctuary of the San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area. River Walks depart from Casa de San Pedro Bed & Breakfast.

  $15 per person for adult members of SABO and/or guests of Casa de San Pedro Bed & Breakfast, $20 for adult non-members. Participation is limited, and reservations are required; prepaid registration is refundable only if unforeseen circumstances force SABO to cancel the walk.

  Visit SABO's most recent study site on the San Pedro River at Casa de San Pedro Bed & Breakfast. 
  

  Banding sessions take place from 4 to 6 p.m. on a weekly to biweekly schedule. Registration is required for attendees who are not guests of Casa de San Pedro. This activity is free to SABO members and Casa guests, $5 per person for non-members/non-guests.

  Casa de San Pedro Bed & Breakfast is located at 8933 S. Yell Lane, Hereford, AZ, off Hereford Road north of Palominas, approximately 25 minutes from Bisbee. Click for interactive map.

  Capture rates and species diversity can vary dramatically through the season, but up to 30 hummingbirds of 7 species may be banded in a 2-hour session.

• Hummingbird Banding at the San Pedro House

  Up to 10 species of hummingbirds use the green corridor of the San Pedro River as a freeway between their tropical winter retreats and their northern nesting grounds. The public is invited to get a close-up look at these tiny travelers as staff and volunteers from the Southeastern Arizona Bird Observatory capture, band, weigh, measure, and release them as part of long-term studies of the bird life of this vital migration route.
  
  The banding station is located at the San Pedro House visitor center of the San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area, 7 miles east of Sierra Vista on Highway 90. For directions, please see SABO's Activities map.
  
  The public is welcome to observe banding sessions at this site at no charge and without reservations, but donations are gratefully accepted. Hummingbird "adoptions" may be available; proceeds support SABO's hummingbird research.

  Spend a week exploring southeastern Arizona's hummingbird havens with Sheri Williamson, author of the Peterson Field Guide to Hummingbirds and scriptwriter for the Advanced Birding Video: Hummingbirds of North America.
  
  August is one of the most exciting months for hummingbird watching in southeastern Arizona. Summer thunderstorms bring a second spring to the "sky island" mountains and valleys. Blooming wildflowers and the area's famous feeding stations attract up to 15 hummingbird species plus many other colorful birds, butterflies, and much more.
  
  Most field trip destinations will be of particular interest to hummingbird aficionados, but we won't neglect the songbirds, raptors, butterflies, and other wildlife that make this region so special. The tour will include short presentations to give you an in-depth understanding of hummingbird natural history and identification. To compensate for early mornings and avoid thunderstorms, most days will incorporate an hour or two of siesta time in the afternoon.

  Featured lodging for this tour will be Casa de San Pedro Bed & Breakfast, adjacent to the San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area.

  Day 1 (Sun): meet in Tucson for orientation and dinner
  Day 2 (Mon): Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum and Patagonia on the way to Casa de San Pedro
  Day 3 (Tue): Ramsey Canyon Preserve, Ash Canyon B&B
  Day 4 (Wed): Fort Huachuca, Beatty's Guest Ranch
  Day 5 (Thu): Chiricahua Mountains
  Day 6 (Fri): Carr Canyon, Ash Canyon B&B
  Day 7 (Sat): early walk on the river, breakfast, return to Tucson airport
  

  * The actual itinerary will be flexible and may change as unusual opportunities and/or access issues dictate.

  $1265 for SABO members, $1295 for non-members double occupancy*; add $495 for single occupancy. Package includes 6 nights' lodging, ground transportation from Tucson, and meals from dinner the first day through breakfast the last day. Alcoholic beverages, guide and lodging gratuities, and other personal expenses are not included. Limited to 8 participants. A deposit of $200 is required to hold your reservation.
