Hummingbird Activities

BBLH1.jpgSoutheastern Arizona is a hummingbird watchers' paradise! Fifteen species regularly nest in or migrate through our deserts, mountains, and riparian areas.

From spring through early fall, SABO offers a variety of events especially for fans of these fierce and flamboyant birds, including:
  • banding sessions at the San Pedro House and in Carr Canyon
  • half-day field clinics at hummingbird hot spots
  • weekend workshops
  • week-long tours
Currently scheduled events are listed below. For information on hummingbird activities farther in the future, please contact SABO.

Upcoming events

    • 20 Sep 2014
    • 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM
    • San Pedro House
bchu.jpgUp to 10 species of hummingbirds use the green corridor of the San Pedro River as a freeway between their tropical winter retreats and their northern nesting grounds. The public is invited to get a close-up look at these tiny travelers as staff and volunteers from the Southeastern Arizona Bird Observatory capture, band, weigh, measure, and release them as part of long-term studies of the bird life of this vital migration route.

The banding station is located at the San Pedro House visitor center of the San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area, 7 miles east of Sierra Vista on Highway 90. For directions, please see SABO's Activities map.

The public is welcome to observe banding sessions at this site at no charge and without reservations, but donations are gratefully accepted to help support SABO's hummingbird research.

Hummingbird "adoptions" may be available at this session. For a contribution of $25, each sponsor receives a certificate with the band number of a specific hummingbird and updates if/when that bird is recaptured. Proceeds support SABO's hummingbird research and education programs.
